Once you buy the game and register the serial key in your account, you get 30 days for free and then you HAVE to pay the subscription. The only limits are hitting the end of Heavensward patches, leveling your character's jobs only up to Lv 60, not being able to add anyone as friend, enter free companies, make parties, using the marketboard, not being able to pick races and jobs from newer expansions and capping the gil at 300K I think.
